30% of orthodontic patients in Australia are over 20, according to the ASO

Adult Braces

The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) says adult orthodontics is the biggest growing market in Australia.

This rise in adult orthodontic patients has been attributed to two key factors:

1. Social media

The likes of Instagram, Snapchat, vlogging, and blogging have made people more aware of how their teeth look. Social media has created — or at least encouraged — a selfie culture: the desire to incessantly take photos of ourselves and post online for the world to see, which has made people pay closer attention to how their teeth look.

2. Improved treatment options

The cliché of bulky, ungainly and unsightly braces clamped to people’s teeth is a thing of the past. Braces now are more streamlined, more subtle—and much less invasive than the cliché.

Modern orthodontics has also seen the rise in braces-free treatments. Braces-free orthodontics are usually clear aligners to straighten teeth without having anything bonded to your teeth and wires tightened for a minimum of 12 months.

A spokesman for the ASO said,
“Your smile and your eyes are the two most important physical things when you meet someone, so it’s understandable that people put a lot of emphasis on it.”

With modern orthodontic options, adults now feel less uncomfortable about finally getting their teeth straightened.

Want braces-free adult orthodontics?

Invisalign has been around since 1998 and is—globally—one of the most popular and trusted clear aligner brands available. Clear aligner treatments like Invisalign are more lifestyle friendly than traditional braces because of they:

  • Can be removed when you eat and drink
  • Don’t require any tightening appointments
  • Aren’t immediately noticeable due to using clear aligners

Because Invisalign is removable there is an element of compliance to its success. You must wear them for 20-22 hours every day to get the best results. And make sure you brush your teeth after every meal before replacing the aligners to prevent decay.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign is a series of clear aligners which you wear to gradually shift your teeth into their ideal position. Digital impressions are taken of your teeth and then sent off to Invisalign HQ where your aligners are fabricated. Each set of aligners will need to be worn for two weeks, and you’ll be provided with 3 to 4 sets at a time.

After the digital impressions are taken, your Iris Dental dentist will be able to show a virtual representation of what your teeth will look like at the end of treatment.
